Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ news that they were divorcing after five years of marriage took the world by storm on Friday. As their marriage is set to end, Us Weekly looks back on their love story.
Unlike some Hollywood romances, Cruise, 49, and Holmes, 33, had no qualms about sharing their love and lust-filled honeymoon stage with the world. “I’m in love,” an extremely giddy Cruise told Oprah during a 2005 episode where he famously jumped on the couch, unable to contain his excitement.
“We’ve never seen you behave this way before!” the talk show host exclaimed as he jumped on the set’s couch. “The boy is gone!” Toward the end of his segment, the audience, with Oprah’s encouragement, chanted for Holmes to come out and join him on set. Cruise ran backstage and brought her out, and they immediately made out for the cameras.
Later, he told ABC News, “[Katie] is just magic. And I really think that all men should celebrate their women. They should all jump on couches for them. When you find that woman, you should absolutely be unabashed about it. That’s how I feel about it.”
It was indeed a fairytale romance for the actress as well. In an October 2004 interview, Holmes, who was engaged to actor Chris Klein from 2003 to 2005, told Seventeen magazine, “I think every little girl dreams about her wedding. I used to think I was going to marry Tom Cruise.”
The following year, her dreams came true: Cruise popped the question on top of The Eiffel Tower in Paris on June 17, 2005.
“I’ve found the man of my dreams. From the moment I met him it just felt like I’d known him forever,” she gushed to W magazine two months later. “I was blown away. He’s the most incredible man. He’s so generous and kind, and he helps so many people, and, um, he makes me laugh like I’ve never laughed, and he’s a great friend.”
Even Cruise’s kids — Isabella, 19, and Conor, 17, with ex-wife Nicole Kidman (whom he divorced in 2001) saw that their dad had something special. “After I began dating Kate, Bella looked at me and said, ‘Don’t let this one go. She’s the one,” Cruise told Good Housekeeping in 2006.
In April of that year they welcomed the daughter, Suri, who would become one of the most famous (and stylish) tots in Hollywood and tied the knot seven months later.
“She has Kate’s lips and eyes,” Cruise said in Vanity Fair‘s September 2006 issue when they revealed pics (taken by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz) of Suri for the first time. “I think she looks like Kate.”
Fast forward six years, and Holmes is now reportedly asking for sole legal custody and “primary residential custody” of their only daughter in her divorce documents.
As their divorce starts to show signs of a rough road ahead, it’s hard to believe that in Cruise’s most recent interview with Playboy for its June issue, the Rock of Ages actor gushes about his wife.
“She is an extraordinary person, and if you spent five minutes with her, you’d see it. Everything she does, she does with this beautiful creativity. She’s funny and charming, and when she walks into the room, I just feel better. I’m a romantic. I like doing things like creating romantic dinners, and she enjoys that. I don’t know what to say — I’m just happy, and I have been since the moment I met her. What we have is very special.”
Indeed, as suggested by a statement released by the actor’s rep, Cruise seems blindsided by the filing.
“Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy,” the rep statement said.
