Robert Halderman, the man accused of trying to extort $2 million from David Letterman last fall, pled guilty to one count of grand larceny in the second degree in a Manhattan court Tuesday afternoon, TMZ reports. In the courtroom, Halderman said, "I have great remorse and sincerely apologize..I attempted to extort $2 million from David Letterman."
His sentence: 6 months in jail, 5 years probation and 1,000 hours of community service.

In September, CBS News producer Halderman threatened to reveal the talk show host's extramarital affairs with female staffers; he left a packet of incriminating emails and photos in Letterman's limo with a note demanding $2 million to keep them under wraps. Halderman had been involved with Letterman's former assistant Stephanie Birkitt, with whom Letterman later acknowledged an affair.
After receiving the packet, Letterman, who is married with a 5-year-old son, Harry, immediately called his attorney; investigators then nabbed Halderman in an undercover sting operation in early October.
Admitting his adultery, Letterman apologized to his wife Regina Lasko on air in October. "She has been horribly hurt by my behavior," he said to his audience, "and when something happens like that, if you hurt a person and it's your responsibility, you try to fix it. And at that point, there's only two things that can happen: either you're going to make some progress and get it fixed, or you're going to fall short and perhaps not get it fixed, so let me tell you folks, I got my work cut out for me."
