Katy Perry's heartbreak has played out in the public eye for months, but on July 5, moviegoers will get an inside look at what led to the end of her 14-month marriage to Russell Brand, 37.
The "Wide Awake" singer, 27, opened up about her decision to include such painful memories in her new documentary, Katy Perry: Part of Me, during an appearance on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno June 21.
"Just because you're in the spotlight, that doesn't mean you get to dodge the curve balls — they're actually bigger," Perry said. "I think if you were to see the movie and [the divorce] was completely avoided, you would come out of that theater going, 'Hmm, that's strange. I know something else did happen at that time in her life last year.'"
"I wanted to handle it very delicately, with the most integrity I could possibly have and show people that, yeah, I'm going through some of the same situations that most of America goes through. And somehow I landed on my feet," she continued. "You don't have to lay down and die, even if you feel like you're going to."
Still, watching her marriage crumble hasn't been easy for the star, who's since rebounded with Florence + the Machine's Robert Ackroyd.
Perry admitted: "It wasn't always exciting to watch those unflattering scenes where I'm crying and having an intense moment, but I think that people will relate to the movie even more seeing me at my lowest point, and now, at my highest point."
