Idol’s Randy Jackson: The Voice Is “Gimmicky”

More than 12 million viewers tuned into NBC's The Voice last week, but there was one person who couldn't be bothered to make it appointment television: American Idol's Randy Jackson.

After The Voice coach Adam Levine slammed American Idol on the May 3 episode, charging that The Voice's rejects could "win American Idol," Jackson is biting back with fighting words of his own.

"It's a great thing when talent can be simple, honest and revered as opposed to spinning around with gimmicky chairs," Jackson told The Hollywood Reporter Friday. "Maybe Simon Cowell should have people opening doors. Like, 'Knock, knock; Who's singing? I can't see you!'"

Jackson's jab refers to The Voice's blind audition round, where coaches Levine, Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton and Cee Lo Green sit with their backs to contestants and push a button to spin around when they like a certain singer.

Without American Idol, The Voice wouldn't even have a place in primetime, says Jackson.

"Look, none of these other shows could exist without somebody forging the path before them," Jackson says of shows including The Voice, which counts season 2 Idol finalist Frenchie Davis among its strong contenders. "I'm happy to say that Idol did that and paved the way."
