"Gaga is in incubation," the singer's stylist Nicola Formichetti explained on Twitter. "Tonight's performance is in collaboration with Hussein Chalayan and House of Mugler."

Once the singer and her entourage arrived on the red carpet, her creative director Laurianne Gibson and a "supermodel nurse" explained all to E! News' Ryan Seacrest as Gaga, wearing sunglasses and black gloves, waved silently from inside the opaque egg.

The "nurse" said that Gaga was in a "creative embroynic stage and won't be born until her performance this evening." Indeed, according to a source, the performance outfit coincides with her new single, "Born This Way," which will get its TV debut during Sunday's awards show.

Gibson wouldn't reveal what the egg was made of or what designer Gaga was wearing within. "She's been in there for a serious amount of time," Gibson said, adding that her time in the egg was a testament to "how committed" the star was to her performance.
