From one Today Show star to another…

When Katie Couric confirmed her departure from CBS News on Tuesday, her many admirers took it as a sign of even greater things to come — including Meredith Vieira, who became co-anchor on the Today Show in 2006, when Couric left to anchor CBS' Evening News.

"I only wish her the best. I just found out today," Vieira, 57, tells Us Weekly. "I'm not surprised. I'm sure it's a decision that she took a long time making. Whatever she does, she'll do it very well."

Vieira is rumored to be in the midst of career changes herself; earlier this month, it was reported that she may leave The Today Show in September when her contract runs out. Her co-anchor Matt Lauer is also said to be mulling a departure — and could reteam with Couric, 54, for a new series.

"I'm really proud of the talented team on the CBS Evening News and the award-winning work we've been able to do," Couric said in a statement Tuesday. "In making the decision to move on, I know Evening News will be in great hands, but I am excited about the future."

"I am looking at a format that will allow me to engage in more multi-dimensional storytelling," she added. "The bottom line is that I love doing all kinds of different stories. I have a lot of areas of interest and I want to be able to fulfill all of that."
