Prince William and Kate Middleton Are Engaged!

A week after Us Weekly reported that Prince William and Kate Middleton will wed next year, the two have announced that they are engaged.

It should be the biggest royal event since Prince Charles married Diana in 1981.

The royal engagement was announced in a statement Tuesday:

"The Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince William to Miss Catherine Middleton.

"The wedding will take place in the Spring or Summer of 2011, in London. Further details about the wedding day will be announced in due course.

"Prince William and Miss Middleton became engaged in October during a private holiday in Kenya.

"Prince William has informed The Queen and other close members of his family. Prince William has also sought the permission of Miss Middleton’s father.

"Following the marriage, the couple will live in north Wales, where Prince William will continue to serve with the Royal Air Force," the statement concluded.

The prince and Middleton, both 28, have been dating for eight years, after meeting at St. Andrews University in Scotland.

They made a secret pact to marry three years ago while on vacation in the Seychelles. "Kate wanted assurances from William," Katie Nicholl, royal watcher and author of William and Harry: Behind the Palace Walls, recently told Us Weekly. "William told Kate she was The One, but he was not ready to get married. She…agreed to wait for him."

Another insider tells Us: "He wants to spend the rest of his life with her."
