"Serena did indeed suffer from a pulmonary embolism last week, and the hematoma was another unexpected scare that was subsequently removed (on Monday)," says the rep. "Thankfully everything was caught in time."

The tennis ace, 29, is recuperating "under strict medical supervision" at home, adds the rep.

Williams added she hopes to put the ordeal behind her and be back on the court by early summer.

"That said," Williams adds. "My main goal is to make sure I get there safely."
