The sun may have been shining, but it was still a dreary day for those who knew Mary Kennedy, as the 52-year-old environmentalist was laid to rest in Bedford, New York Saturday.
(Robert Kennedy Jr.’s estranged wife died of asphyxiation from hanging Wednesday at age 52. Mary’s body was found in her Mount Kisco, New York home.)
The nephew of President John F. Kennedy and the son of Senator Robert F. Kennedy, environmental lawyer Robert Jr. was joined by his four children at Saturday’s funeral. Other mourners included Caroline Kennedy, Maria Shriver, Chelsea Handler, Andre Balazs, Chevy Chase, Susan Sarandon and John McEnroe.
Robert Jr. delivered the eulogy, Glenn Close performed a song, and Larry David spoke during the ceremony.
Married for 16 years, Robert Jr. filed for divorce from Mary in 2010; the proceedings had not been finalized at the time of her death. “A lot of times, I don’t know how she made it through the day,” Kennedy later told The New York Times of Mary, who struggled with alcoholism and was arrested twice for DUI in 2010. “She was in a lot of agony for a lot of her life.”
In a previously released statement, the Kennedy family said Mary “inspired our family with her kindness, her love, her gentle soul and generous spirit. She was a genius at friendship, a tremendously gifted architect and a pioneer and relentless advocate of green design who enhanced her cutting edge, energy efficient creations with exquisite taste and style.”
