Nameberry.com editors Pamela Satran and Linda Rosenkrantz — who penned the books Baby Name Bible and Beyond Ava & Aiden — are blogging for UsMagazine.com about why celebs choose the names they do, and what they mean.

Vince Vaughn and his wife Kyla Weber went super-creative with the first name of their daughter Locklyn, who was born December 18, by taking a traditional Scottish name and switching both its gender and spelling.

Locklyn is the phonetic spelling of the Scottish Gaelic male name Lachlan, which means "lake land." It originated as a reference to a migrant from Norway, the "land of the lochs" or fjords. And while Lachlan has never made it into the Top 100 names in this country, it is wildly popular in Australia, where it is currently No. 3.

By changing the lan to lyn, the Vaughns were following a trend towards this feminine ending, among celebrities as well as the general population. Stars who have recently chosen names ending in lyn, lynn or lyne include Samantha Harris (Josselyn), Cobie Smulders (Shaelyn), Ne-Yo (Madelyn), Dierks Bentley (Evalyne) and Chris Daughty (Evalyne).

For Locklyn's middle name, Kyla, the couple chose to follow an old tradition of using the mother's first or maiden name. Another celebrity mother who observed this custom was Rebecca Romijn, who named one of her twin girls Dolly Rebecca Rose.

Kyla is currently No. 262 on the popularity lists, following in the footsteps of cousins Kyle, Kylie and Kylee.

One tradition Vince Vaughn decided not to carry on was his family's custom of using VV-initial names: his father is Vernon Vaughn and he has sisters named Victoria and Valeri.
