"I don't feel like, 'Oh, I have to be on this side, or I have to be on this side' — I really had specific things that someone told me when I was 19 starting in the business and I listened to them … I don't care anymore," Carey, 40, tells the Associated Press.

"Sometimes I like that [left] side — and Nick likes that side better anyway," she adds, referring to her husband of about 18 months, Nick Cannon.

Carey filmed the flick (due in theaters Nov. 6) without makeup and in a prosthetic nose — which she called "such a freeing experience for me."

"By making me look so bad [the director] brought out the ability to never be self-conscious again, and that was a gift that he gave me," says Carey, who nabbed the role after Oscar winner Helen Mirren dropped out. The singer's movie debut, 2001's Glitter, was a bomb.

In the same interview, Carey — who released her 12th album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, on Tuesday — downplays pregnancy rumors.

"Well, we enjoy practicing," she says laughing, and then adds that now would "not be the right time" because of their busy schedules.

One thing she'd consider making with her husband? A movie.

"We have to make sure the movie was a stone winner — otherwise they would kill us," Carey says.

Adds Cannon, 28:  "It'd have to be a comedy."

"It'd definitely have to be — our life is a comedy anyway," she jokes.
