Charlie Sheen's twin sons celebrated their second birthday Sunday with a lavish backyard bash attended by celebrity guests like Nicky Hilton, David Katzenberg and Adrienne Maloof — but the troubled actor failed to snag an invite.

Sheen's soon-to-be ex wife, Brooke Mueller, teamed with Kathy Hilton to host Bob and Max's party at the Hilton family home in Bel Air, Calif., and while their father was noticeably absent, an eyewitness tells UsMagazine.com the birthday boys had a "great time."

Attended by about 60 guests, the kid-friendly afternoon affair featured a red, yellow and blue color scheme, a big bounce castle and tons of balloons. On the menu? Chinese chow mein and salad served in takeout containers and a chocolate cake for dessert.

"Max and Bob were in heaven running around and sliding down the slide of the bounce house," the witness tells Us of the boys' big day. "They got a ton of presents including tee ball sets and race cars."

With Sheen absent, Mueller, 33, was able to relax.

"Brooke seemed to have a good time too and was relaxed and happy. She seemed focused on her kids and nothing else," adds the insider. "There was a lot of security outside at all times to make sure no uninvited guests got in. There was no sign of Charlie at the party."

Though he missed his sons' latest milestone, the troubled actor — who complied with a judge's sudden March 1 order to remove the twins from his L.A. home — is looking forward to the day when he can explain away his wild exploits. "I will never lie to my children," he tells Us. "They'll understand it through my eyes."
