Katherine Heigl has pledged to donate $1 million dollars from the Jason Heigl Foundation (founded in honor of Katherine's brother, who was killed in a car accident at age 15) to spearhead an initiative called the Compassion Revolution, which is geared towards decreasing the number of animals that are euthanized in L.A.-area shelters by educating pet owners about spaying and neutering their pets.
At a press conference, the actress, who owns six dogs, three of which are rescues, told reporters, "when I was growing up, my mother and father had zero desire for any one of our animals to have a litter. I think it's a lot of work, it’s a lot of energy. Then, as an adult, because of the way I was raised and because I had the means to do it, (spaying and neutering) goes without question."
"How can we change the results for these animals?" queried the actress.
The ASPCA has estimated that 5 out of 10 dogs and 7 out of 10 cats are put down annually in shelters across the U.S. Spaying and neutering pets and shelter animals could dramatically curb these numbers.
"Our goal is that people can actually go to an animal shelter and not feel this horrible sadness and burden that if they don't take that dog home that the dog may end up dead," said Heigl.
