Ryan O'Neal has a brave battle ahead of him.

"Recently I was diagnosed with Stage 2 Prostate Cancer," the Paper Moon actor tells Us Weekly in a statement. "Although I was shocked and stunned by the news, I feel fortunate that it was detected early and according to my extraordinary team of doctors the prognosis is positive for a full recovery."

O'Neal, 70, adds: "I am deeply grateful for the support of my friends and family during this time, and I urge everyone to get regular check-ups, as early detection is the best defense against this horrible disease that has afflicted so many."

In March 1998, the actor announced he was diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia, which causes bone marrow to produce too many white blood cells. He has been in remission since 2006.

O'Neal's latest health diagnosis comes nearly three years after the death of his longtime love Farrah Fawcett, who died of anal cancer at age 62.

He has four children: Tatum, 48, and Griffin, 47, (with Cook Moore), Patrick, 43, (with Taylor-Young) and Redmond, 27 (with Fawcett).
