Katie Holmes isn't going to take this one lying down.
The Associated Press reports that the actress, 32, has leveled a $50 million lawsuit against Star magazine, which ran a January cover story implying she was a hardcore drug addict and on the verge of a split from husband Tom Cruise.
"Star magazine's malicious claims about Katie are untrue, unethical and unlawful," Holmes' attorney, Bert Fields, wrote in a statement. "Not only do they cruelly defame Katie, they play a cheap trick on the public, making ridiculously false claims on the cover unsupported by anything inside."
Using interviews with former Scientologists, Star said that the actress and mom was "trapped in a cycle of addictive treatments."
Said Holmes herself: "Of all the fabricated stories that continue to be published about me, this instance is beyond the pale…The publisher knew this outrageous story was false and printed it anyway to sell magazines."
Her lawyer explained why they are suing for over $50 million: "Tens of millions of people saw the false and startling assertions of (Holmes') drug addiction on Star Magazine's cover, which was intentionally designed to deceive the public, while viciously defaming the plaintiff."
Star mag says it "stands behind" their story.
