The world lost an immense talent on Monday, Aug. 11, when Oscar-winning actor and comedian Robin Williams was found dead of a suspected suicide at age 63. Williams had an illustrious, decades-long career in stand-up, TV, and film, marked by moments both hilarious and heartbreaking — some of which are included in the video montage above.
As a stand-up comedian and frequent Saturday Night Live guest, Williams was famous for his ability to do various impressions and voices. He put those skills to good use in Mork & Mindy, Aladdin, Good Morning, Vietnam, and Mrs. Doubtfire, for which he transformed himself into a soft-spoken British nanny. More recently, he costarred opposite Sarah Michelle Gellar in the CBS sitcom The Crazy Ones.
He had a serious and intense side, too, though. In the 1980s and ’90s, Williams began to establish himself as a dramatic actor, with Golden Globe-nominated roles in movies like Dead Poets Society and Good Will Hunting, for which he won his first and only Academy Award.
Offscreen, he livened up the red carpet and awards shows with his funny speeches and animated personality. As his Mrs. Doubtfire costar Sally Field said after his death on Monday, “he always lit up when he was able to make people laugh, and he made them laugh his whole life long…tirelessly. He was one of a kind. There will not be another.”
