Reeva Steenkamp was laid to rest in South Africa Tuesday, Feb. 19 as boyfriend Oscar Pistorius remains behind bars. The Olympic athlete has been charged with premeditated murder after police found Steenkamp's body in his home Feb. 14.
The funeral for the 30-year-old model was held in her hometown of Port Elizabeth at a 90-seat chapel. "There's a space missing inside all the people that she knew," Steenkamp's brother, Adam, said via NBC. "Everyone is sad understandably, but at certain points we were smiling whilst remembering Reeva because we only have good memories of her."
During a bail hearing Tuesday, Pistorius, 26, claimed he accidentally killed Steenkamp after mistaking her for an intruder in his home. "I fail to understand how I could be charged with murder as I had no intention to kill my girlfriend," the double amputee track runner said in the statement via CNN.
Pistorius broke down in court as prosecutors claimed Pistorius shot Steenkamp with three bullets as she hid behind a locked bathroom door. The athlete's agent said in a statement that Pistorius has rejected the murder charge against him "in the strongest terms."
The hearing is set to resume Wednesday as the defense tries to argue for Pistorius' release on bail pending trial.
