Kate Middleton is one happy camper — and she made a lot of other campers very happy, too, when she participated in a training day at the Great Tower Scout Camp at Newby Bridge in Cumbria, England. As part of her volunteer work with the Scout Association, the 5-months-pregnant Duchess of Cambridge joined other volunteers and a group of Cub Scouts for a snowy afternoon of bread-making, bonding, and skill-building.
Dressed for the cold in a Barbour coat, blue skinny jeans, Le Chameau Vierzon Nord boots, and a special red-white-and-blue Scouts neckerchief, the royal mom-to-be proved game for anything. Shortly after arriving at the camp by train, she took a seat around the campfire and got to work making unleavened bread — which was basically flour, water, oil, and sugar mixed into a dough and twisted onto a stick to be toasted over the flames.
Middleton, 31, was a natural, impressing even the instructor with her baking prowess. “Oh, that’s brilliant!” he exclaimed of her sugary bread. (Incidentally, a source tells Us Weekly that the Duchess has been craving sweets while pregnant. “She’s got sugar on the brain,” the insider says. “Chocolate, biscuits, cake.”)
Later in the day, the soon-to-be first-time mother spent some time teaching survival skills to a group of about 24 Cub Scouts. Among the tricks she passed on: how to make a fire, and how to climb a safety rope.
A source tells Us that despite the heavy snow and 33-degree temperature, the Duchess was happy and smiling all afternoon. “She was really natural with the kids,” the onlooker says.
