How Scream 4’s Plot Remained So Secret

Scream 4 kept its actors on a need-to-know basis.

Long before the horror flick began production last June, Dimension Films took several precautions to ensure the script didn't leak online.

According to E! News, Hayden Panettiere, 21, was in Europe when she was considering the role of Kirby Reed. "Someone flew to Europe to have Hayden read her pages, and then flew back" with those pages still in hand, a source says.

Costar Emma Roberts, 20 — who auditioned for director Wes Craven via Skype — tells Us Weekly she was also kept in the dark about her role as Jill Roberts.

"I didn't know what to expect. I kind of relinquished expectations and just kind of went into it like, 'I hope I have fun, I hope everyone's cool and I hope we make a good movie,'" she tells Us. "I think that's for the most part what happened, so I'm really happy."

To further prevent any script leaks, filmmakers hired many of the same crew members who worked on the original Scream movies — in other words, people familiar with the secret-keeping process.

Though production wrapped in September, test audiences were sworn to secrecy when they saw rough cuts of the film in January.

"At the beginning, we basically asked people to sign a nondisclosure agreement, to not leave here and then tweet about it," the insider explains.
