“If you think this is the part where I’m gonna apologize for trying to go down on Anderson Cooper, you are sorely mistaken,” the 52-year-old said during an interview with David Letterman on Wednesday night. “I tried, ladies and gays. I tried for you.”
In case you were busy watching Ryan Seacrest on network TV, the whole thing started when Griffin’s co-host for New Year’s Eve coverage on CNN, Anderson Cooper, cut away during their broadcast from Times Square to a fellow reporter covering a New Year’s tradition in a small town in Maine, where residents take turns kissing a giant sardine. While the reporter was explaining what was going on there, Griffin bent down and kissed Cooper’s crotch. After he responded with his signature giggle while shaking his head, she went back for more, at which point he tried turning around and stepping away, asking: “Did you drop something.
Griffin, of course, didn’t miss a beat: “I can do it again, I do this all night long,” she said, dropping to her knees. Cooper, laughing, pulled her up, saying, “No, sweetie.”
On Wednesday’s “Late Show With David Letterman,” the host asked what Griffin would have done if the roles were reversed, and a man tried the same move with her on TV.
"If it was Anderson Cooper, myself, and every other gay guy and woman, I'd unzip so fast,” Griffin deadpanned. “Boom. Pants down."

While the comedian and reality star is well known for her raunchy humor and has made news in previous years for her dirty jokes, blue comments, and swear-word slips during her previous three CNN New Year’s broadcasts, the Parents Television Council isn’t laughing. Melissa Henson, the organization’s director of communications and public education tells omg! her organization believes the comedian should indeed apologize and CNN should not give her the gig again next year.
“Griffin simulated oral sex during a live broadcast on New Year’s Eve, where there is a reasonable expectation families with children will be watching, waiting for the ball to drop,” says Henson.” “Should parents not expect a modicum of decency and decorum from a news network? This wasn’t Comedy Central or MTV, it was CNN.”
And though he laughed off Griffin’s stunt, Henson says her group has no problem with how the anchor dealt with the situation. “He handled it with grace and dignity, and tried to cover up Griffin’s embarrassing behavior as best he could.”
Griffin’s publicist did not respond to a request for comment, but it’s pretty clear she has no regrets about the gag.
