Candice Glover‘s got Mariah Carey‘s glitter stamp of approval. American Idol judges gave Glover a big standing ovation after Glover’s performance of The Cure’s “Lovesong” on Wednesday, April 10, but Carey took her praise to the next level.
The Grammy-winning singer approached Glover on stage and showered her with glitter. After Carey, who starred in the 2001 romantic musical Glitter, returned to her seat, judge Randy Jackson called Glover’s song “one of the greatest performances in the history . . . of American Idol” and she broke down in tears.
After the show, Glover shared her reaction to Carey’s glitter bombing with reporters. “I don’t know why she had that,” she said, laughing. “It was just a gold box and then she gave me the box! And it was an empty box but she was like, ‘This is what I carried it in, Darling.'”
“You know if Mariah Carey throws glitter at you it must mean something good, so I was happy!” Glover added.
The emotional contestant also explained why she turned around on stage to hide her face after the performance. “I cry ugly,” she said. “I don’t want anybody to see me crying, oh my God! It was horrible.”
