Allan Arbus, the actor who played psychiatrist Maj. Sidney Freedman on the hit 1970s TV show M*A*S*H, died on Friday, April 19, at his home in L.A, The New York Times reports. He was 95.
The star — who was married to photographer Diane Arbus until 1969, two years before she committed suicide — owned a successful photography studio with his late ex-wife in the 1940s but left the business to pursue acting full-time. He worked steadily throughout the 1970s and '80s, appearing in a dozen or so episodes of M*A*S*H, as well as on Taxi, Starsky & Hutch, and Matlock. He also had roles in films including Coffy and Crossroads.
More recently, Arbus appeared as Uncle Nathan on Curb Your Enthusiasm.
The New York City native married Diane Arbus (nee Nemerov) in 1941 and took up fashion photography shortly thereafter. During World War II, he left to be a photographer in the Army Signal Corps in Burma; when he was discharged in 1946, he returned home and started a business with his wife.
The couple separated in 1959 and divorced 10 years later, when he moved to L.A. for his acting career. In 1976, he tied the knot with Mariclare Costello, with whom he had one daughter, Arin. According to The New York Times, he is survived by both Costello and Arin, as well as his two daughters with Diane, Amy and Doon.
