Reese Witherspoon's arrest may have put a dent in her wholesome public persona, but it didn't change anything in the eyes of her friends. If anything, singer Michael Buble told ET Canada, her handling of the incident just reaffirmed his perception of her as "a kind, humble, down-to-earth, real girl."
Speaking about his "Something Stupid" duet partner at his behind-the-scenes panel discussion, TV Academy Presents An Evening With Michael Buble, at the Wadsworth Theatre in L.A. on Sunday, April 28, the 37-year-old crooner said he "adores" Witherspoon and thinks she made the best of a bad situation. "Everyone makes mistakes," he told ET Canada. "It's just a matter of, really, how you come back from 'em."
In Buble's opinion, Witherspoon came back strong. (Shortly after news broke of her run-in with the law, the Mud actress released a statement apologizing for her behavior on the night of Friday, April 19.)
"I thought that she just showed graciousness and class and great dignity," Buble said. "I hope that when I make mistakes, I come back the same way…I'm sure she wishes she could go back, but the truth is, she's got a beautiful family and beautiful kids, and I think that's what's most important for her."
"I really enjoy spending time with her and her husband," he added to Us Weekly at the same event, referring to Jim Toth, who was also arrested on April 19. "I would love to have a barbecue with her!"
Buble and Witherspoon first bonded when they recorded Frank and Nancy Sinatra's "Something Stupid" for his new album, To Be Loved. In fact, the Oscar-winning star was the first to find out that the singer was expecting a baby with his wife, Argentinian model Luisana Lopilato. "I told her before anyone else in the world knew, even members of my own family!" he revealed to Parade.com earlier this year.
Now, of course, everyone knows. And as Buble prepares to welcome his first child into the world, he's hoping for just one thing.
"I just know right now that I pray that he's healthy and that my wife is healthy," he told ET Canada. "I'm just going to try to be a good dad like my dad was and like his dad was…If he turns out to be a great, macho hockey player or a gay ballet dancer, I'll be just as happy as long as my kid is happy."
